Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Yale PTA?
The Yale Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is part of the nation's largest child advocacy organization. We are a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit association that prides itself on being a powerful voice for all children, a relevant resource for families and communities and a strong advocate for public education.
We are run entirely by volunteers and provide many educational and social programs to benefit students and families, as well as to support teachers in the classroom. We do this through fundraising and volunteering.
Why should I join the PTA?
Joining the PTA gives a voice to each child at Yale and supports all of our efforts to benefit the full Yale campus. In 2023-24, the Yale PTA earned the distinguished recognition of One Voice for Every Child.
What is One Voice for Every Child?
One Voice For Every Child means that for each student at Yale, there is at least one adult advocating on their behalf. It is a significant accomplishment for any school, and fewer than 10% of schools in Texas reach this goal. By earning One Voice for Every Child, we become a more relevant voice during the PTA's legislative session each summer. As a school with an active PTA membership, we can better advocate for our positions on key issues and make a stronger statement.
Who can join?
The Yale PTA is an inclusive organization that is open to everyone who cares about the students and staff at Yale Elementary. We are made up of parents, guardians, family, friends, teachers and local community members.
How do I join?
The membership year begins August 1 and will open shortly for online sales.
Should both parents join PTA?
Yes! We encourage every member of your family to join, attend our meetings and volunteer for our activities. You membership and that of the others in your household helps to support our programs and our school. The more members we have, the stronger our voice at the state and national level when we speak to benefit all students.
Where does the money go?
A portion of your membership covers state and local dues; the rest goes directly to support programs to benefit the students and educators at Yale.
If I join the PTA, do I have to volunteer?
Of course not. While we depend on our volunteers to help manage many of our programs, and we appreciate any time you can spare, we understand that not every member or family has this flexibility. Just by joining, your membership dues help support our programs as well. (And if you want to volunteer, we're happy to have you!) Whatever level of involvement you choose, your time and effort show that you care about our children's education.
I want to volunteer!
Great! The first step s to complete an RISD Volunteer account through Voly. This allows the district to track participation at our schools. Keep an eye out for volunteer opportunities and sign-up sheets. When you see a shift you like, sign up and we'll see you there!
Can I volunteer to serve on the board or a standing committee?
We're always looking for dedicated members to serve in this way! Contact us and we'll find a place to best use your talents!
Do I have to come to the school to volunteer?
Not necessarily. There are plenty of ways to help from home. For example, we often need help assembling packets, or coordinating projects by making calls or sending emails.
How will I know what PTA is up to?
We want to keep you in the know! Here's where you can look:
- PTA events will be in the Community Newsletter that comes home in Tuesday Folders.
- Find us on Facebook.
- Like us on Instagram.
- Follow us on Twitter.
- Attend our monthly meetings.
Do I have to join the PTA in order to participate in events and programs?
No. While we hope you will join the PTA, you are not required to be a member to participate in the year's events. However, PTA membership does offer membership and benefits throughout the year, including discounts, raffles and giveaways.
What happens at PTA general meetings?
During our general meetings, PTA leaders come together to share their plans, ideas, questions and reports with the membership at large. After presenting their business and addressing questions and concerns, it's up o the membership to determine whether a project or proposal moves forward for the group.
Each of our general meetings are connected to another school event, so we keep them short, informative and fun!
I have a great idea! How can I tell you about it?
Use our contact form so that we can connect you with the right folks to take the next steps.
I have a question about a Yale Elementary policy or procedure.
That's not us - we are a volunteer group committed to making the school better. We recommend contacting the front office with your question to point you in the right direction.
